The Korean Guro Game, Ragnorak Online

Aficionados usually call this game RO; its other name is The Final Destiny of the Gods. It’s a MMORPG – a massive multiplayer online role-playing game. To handel the hosting of a MMORPG they need a good hosting provider as internetvikings.com. It was first released in 2002 for Windows and has led to another game, Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second as well as an animated series, Ragnarok the Animation.

In RO, players exist in an environment that changes gradually over time. Changes in the shape and history of the world take place as episodes in the game’s Ragnarok-Onlinetimeline. The environment in which players interact is 3-D but characters are represented on screen by 2-D sprites.

Games can be played Player v Player, Guild v Guild or Player v Environment. (There are other types of gameplay such as Group v Group and Player v Monster, but these three are the ones most played).

The game is divided into a series of maps with their own terrain and monsters and players travel from one to another by loading a new map.

Anyone who last played the game before 2010 will find great changes because the official RO servers were subject in that year to “Renewal” which involved a revamp of game mechanics and changed just about everything that could be changed in the stat system and in character experience and interaction. There are now two main server versions – KRO (the Korean version) and JRO (Japanese). Background music consists of more than 100 tracks.

The game was developed and is run by a Korean company, Gravity, but licensing can be from any of a number of regional organisations and players need to be aware of substantial differences between the version of the game available in different parts of the world. The original P2P (Pay to Play) system still exists, but most players have switched to the F2P (Free-to-play) model whereby the user has access free of charge but pays micro-payments for premium features and virtual goods. In the case of RO, these transactions take place in the Kafra Shop.
